Who is this for?
Rowing is great for developing teamwork, self-confidence and discipline, it promotes a healthy, active lifestyle to school children from all backgrounds and provides an alternative activity for girls and boys to do together. No experience is necessary and for those who might not think of themselves as ‘sporty’, it’s a wonderful alternative to the more traditional school sports.
Come and experience the joy of rowing on the River Thames.
Our aim is for as many youngsters as possible to discover the discipline and excitement of rowing and the pleasure of being out on the river in a safe, friendly environment.
How does it work?
We provide the boats and the expert coaching to enable children starting from scratch to quickly learn how to row one of our Skerries. All you have to do, once you have booked, is get the children there and we do the rest.
How many students can our school bring to each session?
Each skerry is able to take 9 students, plus their teacher or other responsible adult, and the S4S coach (11 in all). The minimum number of young people for one skerry is 4. At Richmond you can book upto 3 skerries whereas at Reading or Thames Ditton you can only book one skerry.
Our Coaches.
All our sessions are led by a British Rowing qualified coach who also holds a current first aid qualification and has trained in Safeguarding and Protecting Children. All of our coaches and other boating volunteers have undergone Disclosure and Barring Checks.
What will the session cost?
S4S is not looking to make a profit, however we have some basic costs to cover to ensure the boats are safe and the right equipment is in place. We offer one-hour, single skerry sessions for £45. For bookings of linked sessions (with the same group), the cost is £30 for each boat session from the second session onwards.
Can the students earn a qualification?
We offer the British Rowing 'Learn to Row' certificate which requires students to participate in six linked sessions.
"Our link with S4S has given our students, all of whom have SEND, the opportunity to get on the water and try something new and exciting. It introduces a range of unique challenges, nurtures teamwork and leadership skills in a way no other activity can. Cannot wait to get back on the water!"
