Skerries for Schools is run entirely by volunteers, and the more volunteers we can find to help us, the more boating sessions we can provide to our clients. Read on to discover some of our roles. Our volunteers provide the coaching to our clients, assist with client boating sessions, and help with boat maintenance and the administration that allows us to operate.
Coaches are experienced rowers or coxes with an interest in sharing their skills and providing enjoyable rowing sessions for our clients. We organise training courses with British Rowing and offer to pay for the training of suitable candidates provided that you commit to deliver a modest number of sessions for our clients in return. Most of our coaches have progressed through this route.
With larger groups we often like to provide additional support to the coaches to make the boating sessions go seamlessly. Our assistants can help in several ways from preparing the boats and their equipment, helping clients put on buoyancy aids, to ensuring that equipment all gets properly stowed and sometimes cleaned after the sessions. Our boating assistants enjoy working with our clients without being a qualified coach.
In order to keep the costs of our services low for our clients most of our income comes through fund-raising activities. We need funds annually to maintain our boats and equipment and even more funds means we can grow faster!
Help with our marketing to find schools and other organisations wanting to row with us, or develop our reach by finding and developing new services with like-minded partners.
There are various administration tasks associated with managing the S4S and TCR bookings process, boat chartering, and onboarding our volunteers and maintaining the currency of our coaches' qualifications.
We seek trustees who have skills and contacts which can help develop the charity and support its good governance.
